Akhand Jyoti

Tree

Near Neel Kanth Mountain, Lord Vishnu took avatar as a small child. This area was initially popular as Shiva’s bhumi (Kedar Bhumi). Lord Vishnu was looking for a place to meditate. He liked the place near Alaknanda. He bagan his cry near the confluence of Alaknanda river. Parvati's mind was moved to hear his cry and both Shiva and Parvati went to that child. They asked the boy what he wants? To this the boy said that he wants a silent place to meditate. Lord Shiva gave him the place he wanted. When Voshnu started meditating there, Snowfall occurred on the mountains.

Lord Vishnu was completely covered by the snow. Seeing this Goddess Lakshmi took a form of  a tree of Ber (Badri) near him and all the snow started falling on the tree instead of Vishnu. This tree not just saved Vishnu from snow, but also from winds, sun and rains. When Vishnu opened his eyes after years of meditation, he found Goddess Lakshmi covered with snow. He said to her that since she took a form of Badri tree she has also actually become a part of this meditation, you will also be worshipped here and this place will be known as Badrinath.
